Iran’s new economic reform plan aims to support domestic producers, minister says
Tehran – Providing support for the country's domestic producers is among the major priorities of the 14th government, according to the Iranian Minister of Agriculture.
“The adoption of a recent economic reform plan aims to help our domestic producers,” Gholamreza Nouri said.
He added that the changes made in the allocation of the subsidized foreign currency can help producers and tap into of the agricultural sector's potential and opportunities.
The minister’s remarks came after the government recently adopted an economic reform plan according to which the subsidized foreign currency will not be allocated to importers of basic commodities, such as cooking oil and corn, and instead put the money in the accounts of the heads of households.
The government believes the preferential foreign currency subsidy to importers was a source of corruption as they manipulated the prices of basic commodities and amassed great benefits.
